![]() ![]() Impressive in eternity stands the Portara of Naxos, the huge marble gate of the temple of Apollo dating to the 6th century. The beautiful picturesque mountain villages, the wonderful beaches, the impressive architecture of the island and the archeological monuments, are an attraction for all visitors and become an ideal starting point for any kind of wandering. And Glynado, the "balcony of Naxos" as it is famous for its sunsets and the panoramic view to all sides of the horizon. The main villages are Filoti with the traditional festival on the 15th of August, Apeiranthos, "the marble village" of Venetian architecture with the largest library in the Cyclades, but also the most delicious dessert of the spoon, the Bible (Tripodes), Agios A Koronos, the picturesque village located at an altitude of 500-600 m. The largest city and capital of the island is Chora or Naxos. ![]() The area of the island is 429.79 km2 and the permanent population is about 17,970 inhabitants. In addition, from Naxos you can travel to Crete, the Dodecanese and the islands of the North Aegean, since ferries connect Naxos with 23 island ports. Its distance from the port of Piraeus is 181 km, while the journey takes about 3 to 6 hours, depending on whether you choose a conventional ship or speedboat.
